Digital Glossary - Biometric Authentication
Biometric authentication
Biometric authentication verifies a person's identity through unique physical features like fingerprints, faces, and irises. Its key advantages are that it eliminates the need to remember complex passwords and since these biological traits are unique to each person, it offers a higher level of security than traditional passwords.

Today, biometric authentication is widely used in various scenarios, including electronic payments, workplace clock-ins and immigration checks. The "iAM Smart" mobile app also incorporates this functionality.
"Smart Silver" Digital Inclusion Programme for Elders
Under the "Smart Silver" Digital Inclusion Programme for Elders, implementing organisations continuously assist elders to embrace smart living through multiple channels and enhance their sense of gain in digital technology.

The programme not only regularly offers a variety of digital training courses to help the elders master practical technological skills, but also sets up fixed community-based help desks across all 18 districts of Hong Kong to provide regular and accessible technical assistance. Furthermore, by building an extensive collaborative network with local organisations and professional bodies, the programme actively develops diverse partnership models to jointly promote digital inclusion for elders.

Programme representatives continuously visit District Council across Hong Kong to conduct briefings and promotions. The goal is to leverage the community influence of the District Councils to show elders the convenience brought by technology applications, ultimately improving their living standards and sense of happiness.

AI guiding smart belt to empower the visually impaired for seamless navigation
Funded by the SIE Fund, the innovative project "AI guiding smart belt to empower the visually impaired for seamless navigation" utilises artificial intelligence to detect obstacles, calculate safe routes and provide vibration alerts to guide users around hazards. Also, the belt features a built-in intelligent navigation system. Once a destination is set, the device can guide the user along the route. Its user-friendly operation significantly enhances mobility convenience.

Through collaborations with government departments, NGOs, and social enterprises, the project team aims to leverage this innovative, cost-effective, and inclusive device to help more people with visual impairments.
