Mr Alvin Miu

Personal Profile

Alvin’s journey with the social sector started with his involvement with the Hong Kong Government Social Welfare Department’s 3E (Enhancing Employment of People with Disabilities through Small Enterprise) Project. He was also a committee member on the Home Affairs Department’s ESR (Enhancing Self-Reliance through District Partnerships) Programme. Both are funding schemes that provide seed grants to social enterprise startups. He has been on the SIE Fund Task Force since its formation and is currently its vice-chairperson and a member of the Commission on Poverty. Alvin is also the vice-chairperson of SEPD, an NGO that promotes and supports employment of people with disabilities. He takes a keen interest in promoting social innovation and social ventures and is happiest when he can find ways to support social venture startups.
Alvin holds a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Economics from the University of Sydney, and an MBA from the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania.  He has experience in the management consulting and retail industry and is currently the Group COO and CFO of MF Jebsen Group, a private company group with interests in tourism, insurance, electronics, automotive, distribution, shipping, and nature conservation.

Expectation towards Social Innovation and the SIE Fund

"I believe the SIE Fund can play a useful role in promoting social innovation and social entrepreneurship in three key areas:
  1. Provide accurate and useful information for stakeholders to understand the various social issues more comprehensively so they have a fact base to act on;
  2. Bring together and incentivize different cross-sector parties to work together to co-create solutions and minimize redundancy; and
  3. Promote a culture of experimentation and willingness to take risks on different solutions, in order to give interested parties greater freedom to explore, experiment and adopt change initiatives without undue fear of failure.
I hope that together, we at the SIE Fund can achieve these via supporting relevant research and government initiatives as well as sponsoring capacity building programmes and innovative programmes, thereby fulfilling our role in alleviating poverty and addressing the social issues of our time."
